Must-Have Getting Ready Wedding Photos

Capturing the Calm, the Chaos, and the Magic Before “I Do”

The “getting ready” part of your wedding day is full of anticipation, laughter, nerves, and those sweet behind-the-scenes moments you’ll want to remember forever. While the ceremony and reception get a lot of the spotlight, some of the most emotional and intimate memories happen in the quiet hours before you say “I do.”

Here’s a list of must-have shots every couple should consider for the “getting ready” portion of their big day:

1. Detail Shots

Before the dress goes on and the vows are exchanged, your photographer will often start with the details: dress, shoes, rings, invitations, jewelry and accessories, perfume/cologne, boutonnières or bouquet, heirlooms or personal touches

Tip: Keep everything in one place so your photographer can grab it easily and get creative with flat lay styling.

2. Getting Glam

Candid shots of the bride and bridesmaids in the process. These moments showcase the transformation—and the fun that comes with it.

Tip: Choose a bright and airy room to get ready—natural light makes all the difference in your photos.

3. Bride and Bridesmaid

Moments of laughter, chatting in robes, helping with the dress, or toasting.

4. Groom and Groomsmen

Fun moments while getting ready, adjusting ties, or putting on shoes. A celebratory group photo adds energy and fun to the prep phase.

Tip: Create a playlist that hypes you up or calms your nerves—whatever your vibe needs.

5. Personal Touches

Gifts exchanged between partners or handwritten notes.

Tip: A tidy space helps you stay relaxed and makes for clean, aesthetic photos.

6. Family Moments

Whether it’s a tearful mom, proud dad, or surprised sibling, capturing their reaction when they first see you fully dressed is always powerful.

7. The Final Look

A last look in the mirror - fully dresses, fully present. A breath of calm before walking out the door. The last fluff of the veil or straightening of a tie. These are the moments that lead into the ceremony—and they’re always worth remembering.

Tip: Before the madness, breathe. Look in the mirror, soak it in, and feel every second of your moment.

8. First Looks (Optional)

The moment the bride and groom see each other for the first time.

The getting ready part of the day is so much more than makeup and outfits—it’s a beautiful buildup to one of life’s biggest moments. Take your time, soak it in, and trust your photographer to capture it all.

Want to make sure none of these moments get missed? Share your must-haves with your photographer beforehand—they’ll make sure your story is captured from start to finish.
